I am an “olah hadasha”–a new immigrant to Israel (as of October 2015). “Holy Balagan” is a blog where I share some of the craziness, warmth, hilarity and frustration of adjusting to life here.  (Balagan means mess and this Haaretz article has a nice explanation of the word.) As a barely literate Hebrew speaker, I’m challenged every day with language, cultural differences, and the general decibel of daily sounds here. Israel is filled with impatient, fast and loud-speaking, hilarious, informal, warm, down-to-earth people living in a country (and region) that never lacks a dull moment. Despite the country’s contradictions and conflicts, it often does feel like one big mishpacha (family).
